SBIR Project

USDA SBIR Phase I Project

Problem Addressed in Project: Native Americans (NA) lag in creation of entrepreneurial endeavors and the NA businesses that are started have a significantly smaller scope measured by revenue and employees than other US new ventures. There has been significant investment and effort focused on closing this gap with little result. Western models of entrepreneurial training have been imposed on the NA community which do not align with NA culture and values. Culture has direct and indirect influences on entrepreneurial intentions. To address this problem a Cultural Awareness Tool (CAT) is being designed and created.
Broader Impact: The hypothesis is that the application of theoretical principles to create CAT can be extended to any learning situation and begin to mold systems to individual learning styles and cultures instead of individuals contorting themselves to fit a system. The research and activities to date are encouraging. The most powerful impact of the project is the efficiencies gained in the interactions between mentors and learners - creating stronger, more productive, relationships.
